A Child Care Centre: One Upgrade Across Network, Security and Microsoft 365
A childcare centre in Mississauga, rebuilt from the cabling up.
Background
A child care centre in Mississauga looks after children every weekday, with staff, parents and visitors moving through the building from early morning until the end of the day. In a childcare setting the technology is not the point of the business, but when it fails it takes staff attention away from where it belongs.
The centre approached NetraClouds with a list of separate frustrations. Looked at together, they turned out to be one problem with several symptoms.
Delivered: April 2026.
The Challenge
- Wi-Fi that could not keep up. Slow and unreliable coverage in the areas where staff actually needed it.
- Structured cabling problems underneath. The wireless issues were partly a symptom. The cabling feeding it had faults, poor terminations and no usable documentation.
- Inconsistent physical security. Cameras and door access had been added at different times and did not work as one system, leaving gaps in both coverage and control of who could enter.
- Email on a hosted server, permanently out of space. Mailboxes kept hitting storage limits, and staff were deleting mail to keep working.
- No real email protection. Filtering was minimal, which matters when the inbox carries parent correspondence and child records.
- Unmanaged devices. Staff computers were not centrally protected or updated, so security depended on whoever was using the machine.
What NetraClouds Delivered
Rather than patch each complaint separately, we addressed them as one piece of work, starting with the cabling because everything else sat on top of it.
- Structured cabling put right. Faulty runs re-terminated, everything brought back to a proper patch panel, then labelled and documented so future work does not start with guesswork.
- Wi-Fi redesigned. Access points placed for the way the building is actually used, with capacity for the number of devices in each area rather than a single unit doing everything.
- Cameras and access control unified. Coverage of entrances, corridors and activity areas, with controlled entry so the centre knows who comes through the door and when.
- Email migrated to Microsoft 365. Mail moved off the hosted server, ending the storage ceiling that had staff pruning mailboxes to stay under a limit.
- Email security layered on. Filtering ahead of the mailbox and multi factor authentication on every account, so a stolen password is not enough on its own.
- Endpoint security for a modern workplace. Staff devices brought under central management, protected and kept updated without someone having to remember.
Why This Matters in a Childcare Setting
The same work carries more weight in a centre looking after children than it would in a typical office:
- Controlled entry. Knowing exactly who can open which door, and being able to withdraw that access immediately, is a safeguarding control before it is a technical one.
- A reliable record. When a question arises about an incident, footage that is actually recording and retained for a known period is what allows it to be answered.
- Protecting family information. Parent contact details, medical notes and child records sit in email and on staff devices, which is exactly what email and endpoint protection exist to guard.
- Staff time back. Every hour spent fighting the Wi-Fi or clearing a full mailbox is an hour not spent with the children.
The Outcome
The centre moved from a set of ageing, disconnected systems to one properly built environment:
- Wireless that works in the areas staff use it, on cabling that is documented and sound.
- Cameras and access control operating as a single, consistent system rather than separate add ons.
- Email on Microsoft 365 with no storage ceiling, and no more deleting mail to make room.
- Filtering and multi factor authentication protecting accounts that hold family information.
- Staff devices centrally managed, protected and patched.
- One supplier accountable for the whole environment instead of a different contractor per problem.
If your site has grown the same way, with each system added by whoever was available at the time, we would be glad to look at it as a whole and tell you what is worth fixing first.
