Most attacks on small businesses are not sophisticated. They succeed because basic controls are missing. You do not need an enterprise budget to close the common gaps, you need a few things done consistently.
Multi-factor authentication, everywhere
A stolen password should not be enough to get in. MFA on email, remote access and key systems blocks a huge share of account takeovers. It is the single highest-value control for the cost.
Backup you have actually tested
Ransomware is survivable if you can restore. The catch is that an untested backup is a hope, not a plan. Managed backup plus a real recovery plan is what turns an incident into an inconvenience.
Email security and awareness
Email is the front door for most attacks. Filtering plus a little staff awareness stops the majority of phishing before it does damage.
Patch, and know what you have
Unpatched systems are low-hanging fruit. Keeping software current, and knowing what is on your network in the first place, closes known holes.
